African American Women Artists: Antebellum to Contemporary

Celebrate African American History Month with Rodman Library! Join the Library in welcoming Katherine T. Brown, Director of Museum Studies and Assistant Professor of Art History at Walsh University.

The focus of the program will be on African American women artists, ranging from the Antebellum period to contemporary America. She will present a survey of images by artists Harriet Powers (1837-1911), Edmonia Lewis (1844-1907), Betye Saar (b. 1926), Faith Ringgold (b. 1930), Carrie Mae Weems (b. 1953) and Kara Walker (b. 1969). The works of art discussed will include quilts and other fiber arts, sculpture and assemblage, paintings and paper cut-outs.

Originally from Georgia, Brown began teaching at Walsh in August 2011. She has taught art history at the University of Georgia, Wesleyan College, the City University of New York and the University of Nebraska-Omaha. In addition she has held museum positions at the American Federation of Arts, Joslyn Art Museum, Georgia Museum of Art and The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation.
The program will take place on Saturday, February 11, at 2 p.m. in the Main Library Auditorium.
