Cleveland Chinese Music Ensemble Concert
Ring in the Year of the Dragon with a special performance by the Cleveland Chinese Music Ensemble at the Hudson Library and Historical Society on Sunday, January 22 at 3 p.m. The six-member group, featuring vocalist Xue "Snow" Yu of Shandong, China, will fill the library's beautiful, spacious rotunda with festive Chinese New Year music, including several pieces about dragons.
Cleveland Chinese Music Ensemble performs a wide variety of Chinese music, including both ancient and modern pieces, on traditional instruments including dizi and xiao (bamboo flutes), suona (oboe), sheng (mouth organ), zhonghu (alto fiddle), yehu (coconut fiddle), pipa (pear-shaped lute), and guzheng (21-string zither), as well as an assortment of gongs, drums, and cymbals. Formed in the fall of 2008 for the opening celebration of the University of Akron's Confucius Institute, the group has performed at many area universities as well as at the Akron Civic Theatre, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, Kent State Folk Festival and the Cleveland Asian Festival.
