Mercy Health Center of North Canton offers low-cost blood screenings the first Friday of each month. Held from 7 am to 11 am, cost is $2 for total cholesterol, $2 for Glucose (blood sugar), and $8 for a complete lipid profile. No appointment is necessary and walk-ins are welcome. Free TIPS training for employees of businesses that sell/serve alcohol products will take place from 9 a.m. to noon March 5 in the Stark County Sheriff’s Department training room at 4500 Atlantic Blvd. NE in Canton.
TIPS trains servers of alcohol how to prevent intoxication, drunken driving and underage drinking. This training empowers your employees to take a proactive approach toward preventing alcohol misuse and maintaining control of the environment.
By training your staff to recognize the signs of intoxication, you can reduce the chance that an alcohol-related incident will occur.

Dates: February 11 - November 5, 2010
This exhibit concentrates on the extremely important, but nonpolitical role that First Ladies play in international diplomatic relationships for our country. This exhibit will feature First Ladies Elizabeth Monroe, Harriet Lane, Helen Taft, Lou Hoover, Jackie Kennedy, Pat Nixon, Rosalynn Carter and Hillary Clinton. On display will be gifts given to First Ladies from various countries around the world on loan from Presidential Libraries and Museums.
Tour includes the exhibit of the Education Building and the Saxton McKinley House

“The Unguarded Moment,” a retrospective exhibit of 50 photos by Steve McCurry, is on view from noon to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays Feb. 6 through April 2 at the Joseph Saxton Gallery of Photography, at 520 Cleveland Ave. NW in downtown Canton.
Admission is free.

McCurry is the photographer who took what has been called the most recognizable photograph in the world today — the green-eyed “Afghan Girl” on the cover of National Geographic in 1984.

Canton Museum of Art pottery students will have more than 200 original pieces of pottery for sale from 4 to 6:30 p.m. March 5 in the museum lobby.
Portions of sale proceeds will benefit the Canton Museum of Art.

St. George Romanian Orthodox Church invites you to our returning Fish Fries and Chicken Dinners resuming Friday, February 12 and every Friday during Lent. We offer battered or oven baked cod or Romanian chicken served with our famous mamaliga, rice pilaf or mac & cheese. Please note, there will be no Fry on January 8. Funds raised help our parish food pantry along with outreach in our community.

The City of Massillon Parks and Recreation Department is hosting two youth basketball programs on Friday evenings, March 5-April 9 at the Massillon Recreation Center. Little Hoop Stars will be 5:30-6:30 pm and Hoop Stars will be 6:30-7:30 pm. Little Hoop Stars is designed to teach ages 4-6 the basics of dribbling, passing, shooting, positioning, defense and rebounding in a fun-oriented atmosphere. Hoop Stars will teach 1st and 2nd graders more of the basketball basics and includes low-competition games so players can learn to apply their skills in a game format.

Two exhibitions of artwork by Nelly Toll open at the Massillon Museum with a reception for the artist from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. In Studio M, prints of childhood watercolors of Holocaust survivor Nelly Toll will depict the life of her dreams while she was in hiding in Poland from the Nazis. The artist's recent works will be exhibited in the Museum's second-floor gallery. The opening is free and open to everyone. No reservations are necessary. The exhibitions continue through April 4. GlenOak High School's Video Production class, under the direction of Steve Pustay, has announced its first Five Minute Reel Film Festival.

Student crews of 5 members or less from from Canton City, Canton South, Jackson, Hoover, Lake, Sandy Valley, Alliance, Massillon and GlenOak High Schools have submitted 5 minute films featuring criteria from 5 different categories.

Internationally Acclaimed Recording Artist, Rebecca St. James, performs in Canton, Ohio, March 5, 2010 at a LIVE concert, and is followed by a showing of her new movie, Sarah’s Choice. The event will be held in the Malone University Johnson Center. Known for her signature blend of modern pop/rock and lyrics of unwavering devotion, St. James also has many book and movie titles to her credit, many of which are focused on purity. In her movie, Sarah Collins faces a choice, her unborn child or her career, that will not only change her life but the lives of her loved ones both now and forever.

Congregational United Church of Christ will host free Family Movie Nights at 7:30 p.m. Fridays during March. The movies that will be showing are:

The Kent Camerata Concert will take place at 8 p.m. March 5 in the Main Hall auditorium on the Kent State University Stark Campus at 6000 Frank Ave. NW in Jackson Township.

Join in the fun at the Canton First Friday Swing Dance on March 5. Learn beginner jitterbug from 8 to 9 p.m., then dance to the Dave Kasper Quintet from 9 to midnight.
The event is in the Metropolitan Center Grand Ballroom at 601 Cleveland Ave. NW (third floor above Blue Olive Jazz Club) in downtown Canton.
Previous dance experience is not required; no partner is necessary. Experienced dancers also welcome.
Admission price includes lesson. Cost is $10 for adults, $8 for students with valid I.D.
