Civil War Music Program
Join Rodman Library in welcoming the Alliance Alumni Chapter of Mu Phi Epsilon, professional music fraternity, as it presents “The Common Soldier & Civil War Music”.
The program will be given by Civil War buff Rick Sampson. Sampson is a graduate of Mount Union, where he majored in history. He taught at Lake Local Schools, both in the Middle School and High School levels. His first Civil War re-enactment was in 1994. He is a member of the 66th Ohio Volunteer Infantry and makes presentations for school groups and civic organizations.
Visitors will see Sampson in his Infantry uniform, with a bayonet, Army Brogans, Cartridge box and his 1861 Springfield muzzle loading rifle, and hear Civil War music from both the north and south. Sampson will talk about the music and musicians of the Civil War, how music was used as a morale booster and sung by soldiers during their marches.
Mu Phi Epsilon is an International Professional Music Fraternity whose purposes are the recognition of scholarship and musicianship and the promotion of friendship. Its aims are the advancement of music throughout the world, the promotion of musicianship and scholarship, loyalty to the Alma Mater, and the development of a true bond of friendship.
The program will take place on Monday, January 16, at 7 p.m. in the Main Library Auditorium. It is free and open to the public. For more information, call the library at 330-821-2665, ext. 101.
