Mining history program

The Wilderness Center Geology Club will host “Ohio’s Mining History and Its Impact Today” at 1 p.m. March 13.

The free program will feature Tim Jackson, Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Mineral Resources Management, and Kirk Beach, geology program manager of the Ohio Department of Transportation.

The presentation will provide an overview of the adverse impacts caused by past underground mining activities and present the processes used by state agencies to identify, monitor, design and remediate underground mining problems. In addition, several examples of remediation efforts will be presented and discussed.

The center is located at 9877 Alabama Ave. SW, Sugar Creek Township.
