NAMI Stark County's "Family-to-Family" education program for those having a loved one with mental illness

Free Course Helps Families Cope with Mental Illness

Families who have a loved one with a mental illness such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depression will benefit from the Family-to-Family Education course. The twelve week course will be held at Science Hill Community Church located at 12316 Beeson St, Alliance, Ohio 44601 every Wednesday evening from 6:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., beginning March 10th through May 26, 2010.
The FREE course is taught by local members of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) who have participated in intensive training as course instructors. The course covers information about schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depression; coping skills such as handling crisis and relapse; basic information about medication; listening and communication techniques; problem-solving skills; recovery and rehabilitation; and self-care strategies. The curriculum is written by an experienced family member who is also a mental health professional.
The course has been well received in Ohio. Stark County now has 18 trained instructors. The Family to Family course has been taught locally since 1996 and several hundred families have benefited from taking the class.
