Ohio Plein Air Society “Paintout” and sale and Lakeside Wooden Boat Show
Blending the artistic expression of the Ohio Plein Air Society (OPAS) and the craftsmanship of the Lakeside Wooden Boat Society (LWBS) will create a unique weekend event July 17-19 in Lakeside’s 2009 Chautauqua summer season.
More than 40 plein air artists from across Ohio will capture spontaneity on canvas throughout Lakeside and the Marblehead Peninsula during the weekend.
On July 19, the “paintout” will coincide with the Lakeside Wooden Boat Show as Plein Air artists and children, for a fee of $2, will paint along the lakefront from 1 to 3 p.m. A Wet Paint Sale and Show on the Pavilion lawn from 3 to 5 p.m. will showcase original paintings that were finished during the weekend.
The Lakeside waterfront will transform into an outdoor showroom of classic wooden boats as these magnificent cruisers line the dock and lawn of the Hotel Lakeside at the sixth annual Lakeside Wooden Boat Show from noon to 5 p.m. July 19. The display will include historic wooden boats, prior to 1918; antique boats, 1919-42; classic boats, 1943-75; early contemporary, 1976-84; and late contemporary, the past 25 years.
Also on July 19 there will be boat rides on the rare 32-foot Richardson cruiser and demonstrations from the Cleveland Model Boat Club, weather permitting. Richardson rides will be given from 1 to 4:30 p.m. and cost $10.
The United States Coast Guard’s 32-foot Cutter will be featured at the dock, as well.
Lakeside will host a picnic for a small fee from 1 to 4:30 p.m.
Three-hour passes for these special events are available for $5. Free parking is available at Danbury High School but no shuttle service is provided there. A $7 auto fee will be charged to park on the Lakeside grounds.
Known as the Chautauqua on Lake Erie, Lakeside is a family destination that has pioneered the act of nurturing mind, body and spirit since 1873. One of the few remaining Chautauquas in the United States, Lakeside offers a variety of spiritual, educational, cultural arts and recreational opportunities.
Except as noted above, admission to the grounds requires a one-day gate pass of $17 (adult) and $12 (youth ages 12-18). Children under age 5 and guests over 90 are free.
